Shiftwheel
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Shiftwheel (“the app”) is a Windows app made by ThinkFlow (“we”, “us”) that converts files on your own PC. This policy explains what the app touches, what it keeps and what it never does. In short: your files and your activity never leave your computer. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking, and we do not collect, sell or share any data.
1. Summary
- Your files are converted on your PC and are never uploaded.
- The app does not connect to the internet. Links in the app, such as this policy, open in your web browser.
- There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking.
- We do not receive, sell, rent or share any information about you.
2. Keyboard and mouse
To know when to open the format wheel, Shiftwheel watches for one moment: a quick tap of your chosen trigger key (Shift by default) while a mouse button is held down during a drag. It uses the standard Windows system-wide input notifications to do this.
For each key press it only checks whether the key is the trigger key and how long it was held, and for the mouse whether a button is down and where the pointer is. It does not record, store or send keystrokes, text you type or mouse movements. This information is used in memory at that instant and then discarded. You can turn the wheel off at any time in Settings or from the tray icon.
3. The frosted-glass effect
For its frosted-glass look, Shiftwheel takes a tiny, blurred, low-resolution copy of the small area of the screen directly behind the wheel or notification just before it appears. This copy is kept in memory only while the wheel or notification is visible. It is never saved to disk and never sent anywhere.
4. Your files
Shiftwheel reads the files you drop on the wheel or choose from its menu, and writes the converted copies next to the originals or in the folder you choose. Originals are never changed and existing files are never overwritten.
Conversion uses components that are installed with the app (FFmpeg and ImageMagick) and, for documents, LibreOffice if you have installed it yourself. All of them run on your PC.
5. Information stored on your PC
Shiftwheel keeps two small files in your Windows user profile:
- Settings (
%APPDATA%\Shiftwheel\settings.json): your choices, such as the trigger key, output folder and quality. - A log (
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Shiftwheel\app.log): the names and locations of files you converted and any errors, to help you troubleshoot. It is limited to about 1 MB.
Neither file is sent to us. You can delete them at any time. Uninstalling the app leaves them in place so your settings survive a reinstall, so delete those two folders yourself if you want them gone.
6. Microsoft Store
If you get Shiftwheel from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles the download, purchase, licensing and updates under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Microsoft may give us aggregated reports, such as download counts and crash summaries, that do not identify you.
7. Sharing and sale of information
We do not sell, rent or share user data, and the app contains no advertising or tracking code.
8. Children
Shiftwheel is a general-purpose utility. It does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
9. Changes to this policy
If a future version changes how the app handles information, for example by adding an optional update check, we will update this page and the date at the top before that version is released.
